When first meeting Markus you encounter a genuine, grounded and exceptionally openhanded person. There is an incredible moment when you first realize that he has engaged you into his world of knowledge and passion. His optimism is infectious and you are drawn into his understanding of our world, as we know it and transported to a new realm of his views and ideals.
A true scientist at heart, Markus will always require proof of concept. His desire to adapt and improve our planet leads him to progressively explore new technologies and to develop applications to further enhance life, industry and commerce. The unknown is a daunting place for most of us but for Markus it provides the thrilling opportunity to learn, develop and innovate.
His passion for all things scientific began in early childhood when he avidly followed the Apollo 11 space mission and became well known at his local library in the small village of Flawil at the foot of the Swiss Alps completely absorbing himself in chemistry, physics, space travel and electronics. Markus would hold gritty conversations with his father’s learned friends and debate with them about scientific dilemmas and hypothesize the effects on our planet.
Markus’ desire to improve and innovate compelled him to build a small computer for his own use at age 12, ordering parts from the foreign electronics stores, saving every last Franc and asking for rather dubious presents on birthdays and Christmas. His fascination with radiation, “its presence evading all five senses and yet being deadly”, led him to design and create a Geiger counter. Being a true scientist even then, Markus needed proof. Never taking another’s theory for granted he carried out his own experiments often having to explain the results to the local authorities and not least to his mum. When ignoring a notice on the kitchen door to ‘Keep out – Dangerous Experiment in Progress’, his mum entered the kitchen, startled Markus who dropped the nitro-glycerin he was making, which led to the whole kitchen being burned out!
Markus studied Electronic Engineering at Berufsschule, St. Gallen in Switzerland. During that time he deejayed at local clubs specializing in House and producing remixes using a unique method of stretching sound using cassette tape. He was a member of the Swiss Coast Guard patrolling the waters of Lake Constance, saving two souls in distress during his service. Also during his undergraduate years Markus flew the necessary hours and earned his helicopter-flying license.
From there he travelled to the USA to study postgraduate Laser Technology at San Jose State University. Returning to Europe for three years he completed a Doctorate Degree in High Energy Physics at the Max Planck Institute in Germany and finally returned to the United States in 1991 where he still resides today.
During his career, Markus has worked as a product analyst for Sony successfully developing their repair methods and also held the position of Senior Technical Solutions Manager for five years at IBM. He has founded and co-founded several companies including Virtual Wizards, a web development company and Green Earth Technologies where he worked as a Research Engineer and VP of R&D, designing new water and soil contamination technologies. He developed the Bioreactor technology, a revolutionary method of treating wastewater and subsequently became VP of R&D for Euretec, a publicly traded recycling company. Many years of research into water and wastewater along with a keen desire to protect and preserve our world from negative environmental impact led Markus to invent, patent and bring to the market a system to bioremediate FOG (Fats, Oils & Grease). His GRS (Grease Recycling System) technology quite literally converts FOG into reusable water and fuel. The GRS technology is UPC (Unified Plumbing Code) certified and Markus has one patent issued and a further three pending, GRS specific.
More recently Markus has partnered with the highly acclaimed Prof. Dr. -Ing. Konstantin Meyl on a ground breaking new water treatment application using Professor Meyl’s scalar wave technology.
Markus’s love affair with water has expanded into a new found passion for sailing. He can often be found hoisting the main sail with his family on the Pacific Ocean in Orange County, SoCal where he contentedly lives and works.

Roger E. Bütow

Roger is the Land Use and Regulatory Compliance Advisor of Hydrologix. Roger has been in the building industry since 1972. He has expertise in every aspect of structural design, landscaping, drainage and planning standards right through to final occupancy. He’s been employed at every level in the various trades necessary for both residential and commercial construction installations. He’s also acted in a consultant-only capacity for private clients.
Beginning in 1997, he founded or co-founded several environmental protection Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and has the proud distinction of being in the role of uncompensated executive director for 3 different non-profits:
The Clean Water Now! Coalition (defunct 12/31/2012), the South Orange County Watershed Conservancy (2001-2006) and the emerging NGO Clean Water Now (founded 1/01/2013): http://www.clean-water-now.org
Subsequent to 1997, Roger has also served as a board member, advisor and/or paid consultant for many South Orange County NGOs that successfully fought off or downsized poorly planned development projects with significantly adverse, unmitigated negative impacts in their community.
Deeply understanding the pros and cons of the development equation, in 1997 Roger began his own land use consultant business primarily focused upon achieving NEPA and CEQA compliance without confrontational acrimony.
Personal portfolio strengths: Water rights, storm water permits (NPDES), Best Management Practices (BMPs) for pollution abatement at both intake and discharge points to receiving bodies, subterranean (groundwater) recharging strategies, desalination, wastewater treatment, State Basin Plan Objective achievements, intelligent watershed restoration, water quality impairment solutions for biota and the pursuit of historical indigenous habitat recolonization throughout the Southern California region.
Roger brings an unusual, atypical portfolio of cross-trained skill-sets and real life experiences that make him uniquely qualified as an advisor. He has supervised or personally built award-winning residential and commercial construction projects and also performed as a consultant to subdivision tract map development planning corporations. He was hired during the 2 year construction phase as an independent water quality consultant to the 5 Star Condé Nast award-winning
Montage Resort and Spa in South Laguna Beach, completed in February 2003.
Roger can assist private or public clients in successfully navigating the potentially complex, controversial world of NGO interface relations, regulatory agency matrices and identifying multiple jurisdiction oversight venues to achieve compliance proactively, rather than reactively. Clients can preemptively avoid protracted time consuming and expensive disputes if negotiations and planning with concerned parties begins early in the process.
In 2011, Roger expanded his goals regarding a more assertive, progressive advisory role and professional portfolio. He is currently acting as an objective, 3rd party peer review analyst for a major water district and consultant to a prominent OC public relations firm that specializes in procuring assured, reliable local water supplies.
Roger still finds time to be a prolific and oftentimes intentionally humorous writer, wading in on various environmental subjects that pique his interest. He’s personally been chosen as the subject of numerous interviews and requested op-ed guest columns for mainstream media. Many of his in-depth articles, on a wide gamut of topics, not necessarily ecological in nature, have been prominently featured at heavily trafficked online newsletters and magazines.
